Description

(from 2012

If there’s one thing every comic book geek like myself is looking forward to is the release of The 2012 film ‘The Avengers” So in celebration of this upcoming blockbuster I honoring my top 25 favorite members of Marvel premier team.

25. Wolverine
First Appearance: Incredible Hulk #180
Joined: New Avengers #6
Call him overexposed if you like, but Wolverine earned his massive popularity for a reason. He's the best there is at what he does. What he does includes everything from stabbing bad guys to guzzling beer, to wooing women to appearing in every major X-Men and Avengers book simultaneously. That's to say nothing of all the movies, TV shows, and video games. He may not be as popular on the Avengers but hey you put him on any team and Logan will always kick ass. This ultimate lone wolf is ultimately a failed samurai at heart. He'll keep wandering until he atones for his past mistakes, knowing full well that such a thing is impossible. In Avengers VS X-men, Wolverine was forced to battle his fellow X-men in a war he regretted being involved.

24. Mockingbird
First Appearance Astonishing Tales #6 (June 1971
Joined West Coast Avengers vol. 1 #1
(September 1984)
Joining the ranks is Ms. Clint Barton herself Barbara "Bobbi" Morse AKA The Mockingbird. obbi Morse is an elite S.H.I.E.L.D. agent who first made a name for herself as sidekick to Ka-Zar. But she found a more lasting home among the Avengers and with her on-again off-again lover, Hawkeye. Like Hawkeye, Mockingbird has no real superpowers to speak of, just top-notch training and a strategic mind. Mockingbird was one of several Avengers who headed to California to form the West Coast Avengers. and remained with her teammates until her supposed death or the death of a skrull impersonating her. Now back on Earth, Mockingbird is still struggling to readjust to life and resume her superhero career. Part of that process has involved leaving Hawkeye behind and forging a new destiny alone. With an entire counter-terrorism agency at her disposal, Mockingbird should have little trouble making a name for herself once again.

23.Black Widow
First appearance Tales of Suspense #52 (Apr. 1964)
Joined Avengers vol. 1 #111 (May 1973)
When the Cold War heated up, suddenly comic book heroes were battling Soviet spies and unraveling conspiracies. The Black Widow initially debuted as a villain, but she quickly defected to America and remolded herself as a superhero and Avenger. Along the way, she's hooked up with half the eligible bachelors in the Marvel Universe. And as we've learned over the years, her career dates all the way back to World War II. Wherever conspiracy and treachery are afoot, you can expect the Black Widow to appear to save the day.

22. Moon Knight
First Appearance: Werewolf By Night #32 (Aug. 1975)
Joined West Coast Avengers vol. 2 #21
(June 1987)
Imagine Batman with a multiple personality disorder, And That's Moon Knight. Moon Knight alternates between being a millionaire playboy, rough-and-tumble cab driver, and hardened mercenary depending what mood strikes him. Recently, the hero has taken on a more prominent role in the Marvel Universe as an official Avenger, and he's poised for a dramatic reinvention

21. Spider-Man
First Appearance: Amazing Fantasy #15
Joined: Avengers vol. 1 #329 (February 1991)
Hey everybody knows Spider-Man who was the average joe who happens to be endowed with amazing powers when he’s bitten by a radioactive spider but did you know that He tried to join the Avengers, Twice, and the Second time he was reserved. As the old saying goes, third times the charm. Spidey may not seem like a likely canidate for the Earth’s mightiest Heroes, but hey, There’s never a dull moment when ol’ webhead is around, and there’s something to be said for an icon that doesn’t take himself too seriously.

20. Wonder Man
First Appearance: Avengers Vol. 1 #9
What makes him so awesome? Simon Williams first appeared as a villain given power by Baron Zemo to destroy the Avengers. But After finding out they an’t such bad people he rebelled and sacrificed himself to save his buds from the Masters of Evil and since then he’s be dying and coming back all thanks to his ionic body His most recent resurrection came from being tethered to the Scarlet Witch through an unspoken, unrequited love they shared for one another.

19.Ms. Marvel/Warbird
First Appearance Marvel Super-Heroes #13 (March 1968)
Joined Avengers Vol. 1 #183
Carol Danvers has power – a great deal of it. She’s able to absorb energy and discharge it. It works specially when who have bad guys like Ultron and Kang the Conqueror cramping your style. When she joined the team for a second time, shortly after the Avengers returned after being swept away to an alternate Earth, Carol was hitting the sauce pretty hard especially when Rogue stole her powers that one time and was experimented on by the brood and embarrassed herself something terrible. After a short leave to get her act together, she’s worked hard to prove her worth as a heroine and an Avenger. Upon the conclusion of the Superhero Civil War, her dedication to becoming the best heroine she can led her to being chosen by Tony Stark to lead the Mighty Avengers. And even aided Luke Cages team when Norman Osborn took over the initiative.

18. Ares
First Appearance: Thor #129 (June 1966)
Joined: Mighty Avengers #1
What makes the Avengers roster stand out is that a freakin god on the team. But that particular god of thunder is unavailable, you can turn to a certain god of war instead. Ares continued his transition from villain to hero when he joined Iron Man's Initiative-approved Mighty Avengers roster. Ares then stuck around when that slime ball Norman Osborn took charge of the Avengers. But no matter who was calling the shots, Ares valued honor, bravery, and honesty in his teammates. And when it became clear those traits were in short supply among the Dark Avengers, Ares made the ultimate sacrifice to help bring down Osborn's regime. He died with more blood on his hands than any Avenger before him, but Ares still died a hero. And given his status as a god, who's to say he won't return to wage war again.

17.The Falcon
First Appearance Captain America #117
Joined Avengers vol. 1 #184 (June 1979)
With the ability to fly and communicate with birds, you'd think The Falcon would be Marvel's answer to Aquaman. WRONG!!!!!! Sam Wilson is a social worker and and hero of the people who uses his strange abilities to fight for justice. It's a mission that has made him friends and a frequent partner with Captain America. But they an’t no Batman and Robin that for sure.

16. Hercules
First Appearance THOR ANNUAL #1
Joined Avengers vol. 1 #45 (October 1967)
If your hoping to see Kevin sorbo anywhere Look somewhere else, Hercules is the son of Zeus, king of the gods of Olympus, and Alcmena, a mortal woman who lived about three thousand years ago. Recognizing the need for a son who would be powerful enough to defend both the Olympian gods and humanity from future dangers he foresaw, Zeus seduced Alcmena in the guise of her husband, King Amphitryon of Troezen. Thanks to Zeus's enchantment, Hercules was born with the potential for extraordinary strength, which he first displayed before he was even one year old by strangling two serpents which attacked him. Hercules serves as potential friendly rival to Thor, but the battle hungry lion of Olympus

15. Scarlet Witch
First Appearance X-Men (1st series) #4
Joined Avengers Vol. 1 #16
One of the finest members of the team (and a personal favorite female avenger of my dad’s) was also the one who tore them apart. Wanda Maximoff was an Avenger for a really long time. Her presence always gave the team a little extra advantage in battle. With mystic powers that were largely misunderstood until Kurt Busiek’s long run on the title, Wanda became stronger and more powerful through the years. Unfortunately for fans of her and the Avengers, Wanda’s powers grew to a point where she became so metally unstable, that she caused the worst day in Avengers history. Wanda was also infamous for the creation of the House of M world and upon its conclusion, stripped the powers of most of the mutant population there for putting mutantkind on the endangered species list till Hope was born. She still pops up every now and then, but she’s trapped in a world of her own imagination that leaves her blissfully unaware of her past or her actions. All and all she’s a walking soap opera

14. Nova
First Appearance: Nova #1 (Sept. 1976)
Joined Secret Avengers #1 (May 2010)
Blend Green Lantern with Spider-Man and you have Nova, the Human Rocket. Rich Rider was once is a humble, working class kid who found himself drawn into a larger world, now he patrols a chaotic universe to prtect it from evil. Fans saw Nova mature and grow in his time with the New Warriors. And when the Annihilation Wave struck, Nova embraced his destiny as premier defender of a battered galaxy. Not to mention he was a short lived member of the Secret Avenger.

13. The Wasp
First Appearance Tales to Astonish #44 (June 1963)
Joined Avengers vol. 1 #1 (Founding Member)
In the 60’s Superhero comics were still lacking for strong female characters and that’s were Janet Van Dyne came in. So what’s so great about Janet Van Dyne? Well, for one, she’s been around since the start! She was avenging the average person from Asgardian Gods, murderous robots and a whole host of other bad guys since before any of us were gleams in our parents’ eyes. Starting out as a sidekick her on again, off again lover/boyfriend/husband, Hank Pym, Janet has been a steady rock for the team over teh 46 year history of the team until her unfortunate death at the end of the Secret Invasion. Her most significant contribution to the team? Janet was the person who gave the Avengers their name, not to mention her extensive wardrobe rivals even the likes of Wolverine's.

12. Dr. Henry Pym
First Appearance Tales to Astonish #27 (Jan. 1962)
Joined Avengers vol. 1 #1 (Founding Member)
Hank Pym has had a spandex identity crisis ever since his first appearance in 1962. Originally, Pym started out as Ant-Man after the discovery of a new particle that let him shrink down to the size of a - wait for it – ant. Then he helped from the Avengers, after defeating Loki he decided to change his persona into Giant Man and even Yellow Jacket Pym’s also made quite a few… poor decisions in his lifetime. For starters, he’s responsible for the creation of Ultron, one of the Avenger’s greatest foes. He’s also hit his wife Janet Van Dyne with five across the eyes, not to mention a Skrull that hit on Tigra impersonated him. As defining actions go, these were not his best. However, Hank Pym still remains someone dedicated to the overall good of humanity. But like many of the Marvel universe’s greatest heroes he’s not a perfect human being It’s just that his inadequacies lead to the formation of robots that want to strip us of our flesh, drain our blood and enslave us for all of time. Pym has done pretty well for himself, considering.

11. War Machine
First Appearance (as Rhodes) Iron Man #118 (Jan. 1979) (as Iron Man) Iron Man #170 (May 1983) (as War Machine) Iron Man #282(Sept. 1992)
Joined West Coast Avengers vol. 1 #1 (September 1984)
One of the more interesting character’s in the life of Tony Stark Jim Rhodes, is the perfect blend of friend and fill-in during their relationship. During his time filling in for Tony He help fund The West cost Avengers (they thought he was the real McCoy) and he got his own suit not to mention trained some new cadets during the post Civil War era. Rhodes is a literal one man army inside his trick out War Machine armor, Outside he’s still a loyal friend.

10. Luke Cage
First appearance Hero for Hire #1 (June 1972)
Joined: New Avengers 6
Luke Cage rose to prominence in a time when black superheroes were finally becoming more prevalent. And if Cage was nothing more than a gaudily-dressed relic of the '70s with a cute catch phrase, we'd still remember him fondly. Now Mr. Cage has evolved into a far deeper character. Now a family man (with partner Jessica Jones), Avenger, Second in command of Cap’s anti registration army during Civil war a rebel before and after Secert invasion and now A newly resurrected Cap appointed Luke to lead the Thunderbolts and the New, new, new, New Avengers. Cage embodies much of what we love about Marvel's heroes. Sweet Christmas, indeed.

9. The Hulk
First Appearance Incredible hulk (vol. 1)#1
Joined Avengers vol. 1 #1 (Founding Member)
Anyone who has ever felt rage at the world around him can identify with Hulk. This hero transplants the famous Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde dynamic straight into the Marvel Universe. Dr. Bruce Banner is a brilliant but deeply disturbed man who hails from a childhood of abuse. All that inner torment was given physical shape when a gamma bomb transformed Banner into the Incredible Hulk. But despite the fact that they tussle now and days but the Not so jolly green giant actually helped founded the Avengers. And he left, what a shock well his relationship with the team is stormy and wouldn’t ya know it Red hulk is hanging with the Main team abut still Bruce’s gamma alter ego stuck with the team in the EMH animated series and the movie.

8. Black Panther
First Appearance: Fantastic Four #52 (July 1966)
Joined: Avengers Vol. 1, #52
Just call him The King of Badass… The Wakandan King, T’Challa, is more than just an uppity, smug ruler, he’s got an IQ on the level of Tony Stark. Like Stark, the Black Panther has all the raw materials to make fun toys to blow stuff up as well. In ways that most can put it The Black Panther could be called Marvel's Batman. Not because they have the same silhouette, but because he too is a man of immense resources and a fierce will that pushes him to be the best at what he does. Whenever he shows up, you better believe he will kick some major butt. Oh, I almost forgot to mention… One of the longest standing symbols of the Avengers was designed and built by T’Challa and the Wakandan people – the Quinjet.

7. Hawkeye
First Appearance Tales of Suspense #57 (Sept. 1964)
Joined Avengers vol. 1 #16
Who say you need a clean slate to be a superhero. Clint Barton used his skills as an archer to make a name for himself in the circus, but being mixed up with the wrong crowd he eventually became a petty criminal. But Captain America showed him the error of his ways. Despite looking up to Cap as a mentor, Clint often challenge many of Cap’s decisions. Even though this led to the occasional friction between Cap and Hawkeye, Clint would use what Cap tought him to eventually lead the West Coast Avengers and later the Thunderbolts (a team of former criminals looking to change public opinion and do something honorable with their powers). He knows better than most the value of redemption and a second chance. And after a temporary death and brief turn to darkness, Hawkeye is once again the fun-loving archer we all know and love.

6. The Vision
First Appearance: Avengers Vol. 1 #57
The Vision was as a synthozoid, an artificial man composed of mechanical parts as well the creation of the Avengers’ deadliest foe, Ultron. Built using parts from the original Human Torch and the brainwaves of Wonder Man to help destroy the team, Vision would eventually find inspiration from the team and turn against his creator. Upon learning that he is being voted onto the team, the Vision showed his very human side by shedding tears of joy (and they say robots can’t show emotions). Virtually indestructible, the Vision has been an important member of the team who can tap into the computers of Avengers Mansion to access files on villains and assist with tactical strategy. His connection to a few of the team members in this list, particularly Wonder Man and The Scarlet Witch, is personal with deep roots. However, he has always had the ears and the trust of the “Big 3″, Cap, Iron Man, and Thor. He was mercilessly destroyed at the beginning of “Disassembled” when several Ultrons popped out of him, but he lives on in the pages of Young Avengers after rebuilding himself out of young Kang’s Iron Lad suit. He even regained most of his memories thanks to Tony Stark saving his brain patterns.

5. The She-hulk
First Appearance The Savage She-Hulk #1 (Feb. 1980)
Joined Avengers vol. 1 #221 (July 1982)
Sure it’s weird seein a female counterpart outrank the male counter part but There's nothing that's a cheap cross-marketing ploy about She-hulk, nope, no sir. Uh-uh. Jennifer Walter's is Bruce Banner's (AKA the Incredible Hulk) cousin. Where Hulk is merely an outlet for Bruce Banner's rage and pain, She-Hulk is pure liberation for the geeky, mousy Jennifer Walters. She works as a lawyer (which could make one question her status as a hero...), often showing up in court "hulked out". Which is a good legal strategy, I must say. "Find my client innocent of all charges or I'll smash puny humans!" She-Hulk has also found herself on both the Avengers and the Fantastic Four. This striking beautiful jade powerhouse has an impressive track record in comics, and the small screen not to mention beating the snot out of Chun-li and Phoenix Wright in Both versions of Marvel Vs Capcom 3, Not only if she would join her cousin in the big screen.

4. Tigra
First Appearance: The Cat: Claws of the Cat #1 (November, 1972)
Tigra: Giant-Size Creatures #1 (July, 1974)
Joined Avengers vol. 1 #211 (September 1981)
Greer Grant started out as a human who went through treatments that took her to peak human level, then she took up the mantle of The Cat. When she was dying, her mentor Dr. Tumolo offered to save her life by bonding her soul with one of Cat People. Greer accepted and was transformed into an orange furry woman in a leather bikini. This founding West Coast Avengers doesn't get much respect. From being stuck on the B-team to falling into '90s obscurity to getting brutally beaten by the Hood (she fought back in siege), the Marvel Universe Tigra has had it kinda rough, before becoming a leading character in the Avengers Academy and a mommy. Despite all this Tigra pounces her way into fan boys hearts. Beside the worlds needs more half human cats, especially ones that look like contestants for a ms. Beast pageant.

3. Captain America
First Appearance: Captain America Comics #1 (Mar. 1941)
First Silver Age Appearance: Avengers Vol. 1 #4
Sorry folks but Cap’s not no.1 As much as Cap’s presence on the team is what makes the Avengers the Avengers, Cap has a life of his own outside the team. There’s a reason why Cap is the one that gets to shout “Avengers Assemble!” when the troops need to be rallied. He’s the hero everyone in the Marvel Universe looks up to and aspires to be. He’s pure. He stands for what’s good and right at all times, no compromises. That’s why Captain America spearheads that battle cry. However, Cap’s inspiration reaches beyond the Avengers. At Marvel, he’s the perfect model for what a hero is and his death at the end of the Civil War has rocked the universe to its core, plus He came back from the dead to put an end to Norman Osborn’s reign as the most powerful man in the world.

2. Thor
First Appearance Journey into Mystery #83 (Aug. 1962)
Joined Avengers Vol. 1 #1 (Founding Member)
One of the most famous characters in classic mythology is also one of the most famous superheroes. The Norse God of Thunder pumps up the muscle, thanks to his movie debute Thor's popularity is only skyrocketing. This God of Thunder is an Asgardian warrior renowned across the Nine Worlds for his fury and skill in battle.. By far the strongest and most indemonstrable member of the team, if it wasn’t for Thor, there would be no Avengers. he team formed when Loki was looking for some way to destroy his pesky stepbrother. Loki used his powers to manipulate the Hulk to bring him close to Thor. What Loki didn’t count on was the team that assembled would become the most powerful collection of heroes to ever get together. Sucks to be him. But it's been Thor's time among mortals on Midgard that has truly defined his life as a hero. Thor is now a champion of humans as well as gods. And if that causes tension as both worlds exert their pull on him, Thor will always remain loyal to both.

1. Iron Man
First Appearance: Tales of Suspense #39 (Mar. 1963)
Joined: Avengers Vol. 1 #1 (Founding Member)
No hero has benefited from the current superhero movie craze more than Iron Man. Now everyone knows the story of how billionaire industrialist Tony Stark escaped certain death by building an advanced suit of armor. Tony builds the foundation of the Avengers. Despite taking a side in the Civil War that has changed the Avengers for 3 years, Tony Stark has always been an influential part of the team. When the team got together, he provided them a place to hang out (Avengers Mansion). He also signed the checks for the team’s stipend and gave them the use of his own butler, Jarvis. When the first New Avengers formed, he let the team use an entire floor of his new skyscraper, later renamed Avengers tower. His longtime, close relationships with Captain America and Thor makes up the “Holy Trinity” of the Avengers.

I'm not surprised you would put Iron Man as your #1 favorite pick, what really surprises me is out of all the female Avenger members, the high one on your list is Tigra.
